Prevalence, awareness, treatment and control rates of diabetes mellitus and their related influencing factors among residents aged 35-75 years in Rongchang District, Chongqing Municipality

Abstract:Objective To analyze the prevalence, awareness, treatment and control rates and influencing factors of diabetes mellitus (DM) among residents in Rongchang District, Chongqing Municipality, and to provide a basis for the government to adjust prevention and control measures of DM. Methods A total of 5,669 permanent residents aged 35-75 years were actively recruited for physical examination, blood biochemical test and questionnaire survey. The data were analyzed by SPSS 22.0 statistical software. The prevalence, awareness, treatment and control rates of DM among groups were compared by χ2 test, and their related influencing factors were analyzed by unconditional binary stepwise logistic regression. Results The prevalence rates of hypertension, DM and dyslipidemia in Rongchang District of Chongqing Municipality were 49.46%, 16.76% and 16.00%, respectively, and the age standardized prevalence rates were 41.13%, 14.01% and 15.66%, respectively. The awareness, treatment and control rate of DM were 39.68%, 35.47% and 12.63%, respectively. The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that occupations, household registration, smoking and dyslipidemia were related to DM. The awareness rate of DM was higher in the retired. The treatment rate of DM was higher in the males. The control rate of DM was higher in the age groups of 60-69 years and 70-75 years, but lower in families with an annual income of ¥20,000 or ¥30,000. The awareness, treatment and control rates of DM were low in dyslipidemia patients. Conclusion The prevalence rate of DM was high in residents aged 35-75 years in Rongchang District of Chongqing Municipality, but the awareness, treatment and control rates were low. It is of great significance for DM prevention and control to strengthen health education about DM and blood glucose monitoring in patients with dyslipidemia and enhance DM screening in the lower age group.
