Abstract:Objective To explore the correlation and dose-response relation between serum selenium level and cancer-related mortality based on a meta-analysis. Methods PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang Database and VIP Database were searched for prospective observational studies on the relationship between serum selenium level and cancer-related mortality, and two researchers independently selected the literatures according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The included literatures were statistically analyzed by Stata 12.0 software. Results A total of 7 articles (2 nested case-control studies and 5 cohort studies) were included, involving 36,861 participants. A random effect model was used to combine effect quantity. The results of meta-analysis revealed that high serum selenium level was negatively correlated with cancer-related mortality in the population (RR=0.76; 95%CI:0.59-0.98). The results of dose-response relationship analysis displayed that every 50 ng/ml increase in serum selenium level could significantly decline cancer-related mortality in the population (RR=0.86; 95%CI:0.81-0.91). Conclusion High level of serum selenium can decline the mortality of cancer in the population.
