Abstract:Objective To investigate the combined impact of hearing loss and diabetes on the risk of memory related diseases in the middle-aged and elderly in China, and to provide references for the early prevention and treatment of memory related diseases. Methods Using the longitudinal follow-up data from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) from 2011 to 2018, a total of 12,711 individuals were included. According to the status of baseline hearing loss and diabetes, these subjects were divided into the group without hearing loss and diabetes, the group without hearing loss but with diabetes, the group with hearing loss but without diabetes and the group with hearing loss and diabetes. Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze the combined effect of hearing loss and diabetes on memory related diseases. Results After an average follow-up of 6.1 years, a total of 285 cases of memory related diseases occurred.Taking individuals without hearing loss and diabetes as the control group, after adjusting for confounding factors, the hazard ratios (95%CI) of occurrence of memory related diseases in the group with hearing loss but without diabetes, the group without hearing loss but with diabetes and the group with hearing loss and diabetes were 1.81(1.22-2.68), 1.44(0.86-2.41) and 4.72(2.19-10.14) respectively. The results of subgroup analyses based on sex and BMI were consistent with the primary results. Conclusion Hearing loss combined with diabetes is associated with an increased risk of memory related diseases, suggesting that the monitoring of hearing and blood glucose in the middle-aged and elderly should be strengthened, which is helpful for the early prevention of memory related diseases.
