Analysis on the acceptance and adoption of online HIV self-testing among males in Qingpu District of Shanghai Municipality

Abstract:Objective To understand the characteristics of populations for offline HIV antibody detection and online self-testing among males in Qingpu District of Shanghai Municipality, and to analyze their acceptance and adoption of online self-testing so as to improve the pertinence and accessibility of online self-testing services provided by centers for disease control and prevention. Methods During the period from January 1 to December 31, 2021, we collected the survey information of male subjects for offline HIV antibody testing and online self-testing, and then conducted a statistical analysis. We also explored the impacts of general sociodemographic characteristics, behavioral characteristics, awareness of AIDS knowledge and their related factors on the acceptance and adoption of online self-testing. Results A total of 393 males were investigated in this study, and online self-testing accounted for 53.44% (210/393). Multivariate analysis showed that men with college degree or above (OR=3.916, 95%CI:1.776-8.632; OR=3.556, 95%CI:1.797-7.035) and men having no a sexual history (OR=0.112, 95%CI:0.022-0.560; OR=0.111, 95%CI:0.047-0.263) had higher acceptance and adoption. Men under 35 years old (OR=0.379, 95%CI:0.146-0.985) and men with gay sexual behavior (OR=0.346, 95%CI:0.157-0.764) had higher acceptance. Men who usedcondoms in the last sexual intercourse (OR=2.068, 95%CI:1.107-3.863) and men who were willing to receive HIV self-testing based on express service packages (OR=17.396, 95%CI:7.507-40.309) had higher adoption, with P<0.05. Conclusion Online HIV self-testing may have a greater detection demand in male populations with high education and having no a sexual history, and this detection method is an effective supplement to offline detection. The operation mode of online self-testing should be constantly improved, and more targeted publicity should be carried out to effectively meet the detection needs of different populations.
