Reproductive intention and its relationship with childbearing cost and benefit among women of childbearing age in Jiading District of Shanghai under the universal three-child policy

Abstract：Objective To investigate the reproductive intention and its relationship with childbearing cost and benefit among women of childbearing age in Jiading District of Shanghai so as to provide scientific references for promoting and improving the corresponding policies under the universal three-child policy. Methods The stratified probability sampling method was used to select women of childbearing age who gave birth to one child as the survey subjects. General information questionnaire and childbearing cost and benefit questionnaire were employed to conduct the survey. Multiple logistic regression model was applied to analyzing the factors influencing reproductive intention. Results Among 433 respondents, 79 (18.2%) were willing to have another child, 88 (20.3%) had no idea, and 266 (61.4%) were not willing to have another child. The results of multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that children’s education cost (OR=0.430, 95%CI:0.186-0.995), stress of time and effort for caring children (OR=0.408, 95%CI:0.194-0.856), pressure to educate children (OR=0.520, 95%CI:0.298-0.907) and the utility of education optimization (OR=2.346, 95%CI:1.216-4.526) were the factors influencing reproduction. The utility of inheritance responsibility (OR=0.669, 95%CI:0.478-0.937) was the factor affecting non-reproduction. Conclusion The reproductive intention in women of childbearing age in Jiading District of Shanghai is improved, but still at a low level. It is necessary to issue more supporting and subsidy policies, strengthen investment in public education, provide diversified childcare services, and carry out publicity from the perspectives of education optimization and inheritance responsibility effectiveness so as to better promote and implement the universal three-child policy.
