Abstract:Objective To understand residents’ access to COVID-19 (COVID-19) information in Beijing under normal epidemic prevention and control, and to provide a basis for the development of scientific and effective health communication strategies. Methods From August 5 to 13, 2020, a stratified convenience sampling method was adopted to conduct an online questionnaire survey on the basic information, access to COVID-19 information and information content needs of 1,942 Beijing residents through Wechat, QQ and other communication platforms. The data were statistically processed by SPSS 19.0 software. Results Among the 1,942 residents in Beijing, the top two channels for obtaining COVID-19 information were “Internet and new media” (98.0%) and “TV as well as radio” (90.2%). The top two sources of information obtained from the Internet and new media were “the government’s official website, microblog, WeChat official account, etc” (94.0%) and “professionalinstitutions’ websites, microblogs, WeChat official accounts, etc” (93.6%). The top two information requirements were “basic knowledge about COVID-19” (85.5%) and "preventive measures" (83.9%). There were still some differences in the proportions of obtaining information from different ways and demanding various kinds of information among residents with different residence types, genders, occupation and age characteristics. Conclusion Under normal epidemic prevention and control, residents in Beijing have the highest proportion ofobtainingCOVID-19 information through the Internet and new media, and a high demand for COVID-19 information. Therefore, the government should adhere to the demand-oriented approach, and relevant government departments should adopt diversified health communication channels to disseminate information about COVID-19 to residents in a timely, scientific and accurate manner.
