Investigation on a cluster epidemic of COVID-19 in District L of City Y, Hunan Province

Abstract:Objective To investigate a cluster epidemic of COVID-19 in District L so as to provide a scientific basis for epidemic prevention and control. Methods Field epidemiological methods were used to investigate cases and close contacts. Material and data about the epidemiological investigation were descriptively analyzed. Real-time fluorescent RT-PCR was used to detect nucleic acid from the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the pharyngeal swab specimens collected. Results One confirmed case and 4 asymptomatic carriers were found in this cluster epidemic. The sources of infection were asymptomatic carriers A and B who returned to hometown from Wuhan City, Hubei. The confirmed case C was infected by sharing the car or attending the meal with the asymptomatic carriers A and B. Cases D and E were infected by living with theasymptomatic carriers A and B in common life. Conclusions The SARS-CoV-2 is highly infectious, and asymptomatic carriers can be the source of infection. It is necessary to strengthen the detection and management of asymptomatic carriers.
