Abstract:Objective To investigate the epidemiological characteristics and epidemic trend of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Wuhan City so as to put forward the targeted prevention and control measures. Methods The epidemic data regarding 5 kinds of STDs including gonorrhea, syphilis, condyloma acuminatum, genital herpes and genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection in Wuhan City were collected from the China Disease Prevention and Control Information System. A descriptive epidemiological study was conducted to analyze the epidemiological characteristics of the STDs cases, and a trend analysis was also performed. Results A total of 32,371 STDs cases were reported in Wuhan City during 2008-2016, with the annual average being 3,567 cases. The reported incidence rate decreased from 43.81/100,000 in 2008 to 30.42/100,000 in 2016 (P=0.041,5). The reported incidence rates of syphilis, gonorrhea, genital herpes and genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection respectively decreased from 15.37/100,000, 13.84/100,000, 2.37/100,000 and 3.12/100,000 in 2008 to 6.49/100,000 (P=0.027,8), 7.36/100,000 (P=0.010,2), 2.09/100,000 (P=0.559,1) and 1.47/100,000 (P=0.126,1) in 2016, but the reported incidence rate of condyloma acuminatum increased from 9.11/100,000 in 2008 to 13.02/100,000 in 2016 (P=0.436,8). The reported male STDs cases were more than the female ones. Most of the cases occurred in young and middle-agedsexually-active group aged 20-40 years, but the proportion of the group aged 50 years and above increased from 20.98% in 2008 to 30.82% in 2016, showing a statistically significant difference by trend test (P<0.000,1). The incidence in housework and unemployment population was the highest (22.74%). The cases were mainly concentrated in the locals (76.17%). The proportion of men to women fluctuated at 1.50:1,decreased year by year from 2.00:1 in 2008 to 1.26:1 in 2013, and then increased year by year to 1.62:1 in 2016 (P<0.000,1). The proportion of cases aged 50 years and above rose from 20.98% in 2008 to 30.82% in 2016 (P<0.000,1). The proportion of cases from other provinces increased from 2.58% in 2008 to 7.03% in 2016 (P<0.000,1). Conclusions Special attention should be paid to preventing and controlling syphilis and other STDs in young and middle-aged people, the crowd aged 50 years and above and the floating population. It is necessary to intensify health education, transfer STDs patients to medical institutions with standardized diagnosis and treatment, and combine medical care with prevention so as to control the epidemic of STDs.
