Abstract:Objective To analyze the epidemic characteristics of injuries and its influence on disease burden among residents in Dingcheng District of Changde City from 2013 to 2015, and to provide a scientific basis for formulating injury prevention and control strategies and measures and related health policies. Methods The data concerning population and annual registered death causes in Dingcheng District during 2013-2015 were statistically analyzed. The mortality rate, standardized mortality rate and potential years of life lost (PYLL) due to injury as well as death cause-excluded life expectancy were calculated. Results A total of 1,060 people died from injuries in Dingcheng District of Changde City during 2013-2015. The mortality rate and standardized mortality rate of injury were 43.98/100,000 and 40.56/100,000 respectively. The standardized mortality rate of the males was significantly higher than that of the females (54.32/100,000 vs. 26.86/100,000, P<0.001). The top five causes of death of injuries were traffic accident, suicide, drowning, accidental poisoning and accidental fall, and the mortality rate increased with the increasing age. The PYLL caused by injuries was 10.41 person-years/1,000 persons, and the average potential years of life lost (APYLL) was 23.67 person-years. Life expectancy of residents in Dingcheng District of Changde City was 79.80 years, and it was increased by 0.96 years when the injury deaths were excluded. Conclusions Injuries seriously affect the life and health of the residents. Traffic accident, suicide and other injuries have become the main causes of life lost and disease burden in residents in Dingcheng District of Changde City. It is necessary to formulate targeted effective control strategies and intervention measures so as to reduce the residents’ mortality rate of injury.
