Abstract:Objective To investigate the prevalence rates of overweight, obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in middle-aged senior intellectuals from a scientific research institute, and to explore their differences among groups with different body mass indexes (BMI) and their influencing factors. Methods A cluster sampling method was used to select 931 in-service middle-aged senior intellectuals as the research objects, and their height, body weight, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, serum total cholesterol and triglyceride were determined from May to August, 2014. BMI, the prevalence rates of overweight, obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia were calculated. According to BMI, the population was divided into the low body weight group, the normal weight group, the overweight group and the obesity group. The prevalence rates and the combined prevalence rate of hypertension, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in each group were statistically analyzed. Results The prevalence rates of overweight, obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia were 33.62%, 10.53%, 17.72%, 8.27% and 27.28% respectively. With the increase of BMI, the prevalence rates and the combined prevalence rate of hypertension, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia were increased, with statistically significant differences(χ2hypertension=66.13, χ2hyperglycemia=31.62, χ2hyperlipidemia=83.75, χ2combined prevalence rate=52.35, all P<0.05). The inter-group comparison showed that the prevalence rates of hypertension, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in the overweight group (24.92%, 9.58%, 42.17% and 14.37%) and of the obesity group (38.78%, 22.45%, 45.92% and 28.57%) were all higher than those of the normal weight group (9.70%, 4.95%, 15.25% and 5.35%), showing statistically significant differences (all P<0.05). Conclusions The prevalence rates of hypertension, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia of the middle-aged senior intellectuals in this scientific research institute in 2014 are high, and the prevalence rates and the combined prevalence rate of the above-mentioned three diseases are all higher in the overweight or obese middle-aged senior intellectuals than in the normal weight ones.
