Abstract:Objective To understand the prevalence and influencing factors of negative life events such as deliberate self-injury and suicide among adolescents in Luohu District, Shenzhen City, and to provide a scientific basis for effectively controlling the occurrence and development of negative life events and promoting the physical and mental health of adolescents. Methods A total of 1,008 middle school students in Luohu District were selected by stratified cluster random sampling in this cross-sectional survey. The related information was collected by on-site questionnaire survey, and then a univariate correlation analysis and multivariate regression analysis were conducted to analyze the relationship between suicide, self-injury and other factors. Results The reported rates of suicide thought, suicide planning, attempted suicide, and self-injury were 25.81%, 8.33%, 3.66%, and 38.21%, respectively. The exposure rates of participation in school bullying, anxiety and depression among adolescents were 17.50%, 37.30% and 22.05%, respectively. The factors significantly correlated with suicide and self-injury in univariate analysis included the degree of relationship rapport with parents, sleep duration, smoking, alcohol consumption, Internet addiction, video game addiction, fight, participation in school bullying, anxiety and depression. In multivariate regression analysis, the factors that played an obvious role mainly included the degree of relationship rapport with parents, anxiety, depression, and being bullied at school. Girls were more likely than boys to have emotional problems such as anxiety and depression, and more likely to have suicide thought. Junior middle school students had higher rate of school bullying than senior middle school students, and were more likely to have suicide plans. Conclusion Only by focusing on optimizing the family and school environment of teenagers, and building a harmonious relationship with teachers, schoolmates and parents can we reduce the occurrence of all kinds of psychological and behavioral problems and achieve effective prevention and control of negative life events in adolescents.
