Abstract:Objective To investigate the antibiotic resistance and the virulence genes of Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei in Hunan Province. Methods Susceptibility to 12 antibiotic agents was tested by the disc diffusion method and virulence genes were detected by PCR in 30 Shigella flexneri and 30 Shigella sonnei strains. Results Two kinds of Shigella to ampicillin, nalidixic acid, tetracycline and rifampicin on average have a higher resistance, while levofloxacin, gentamicin have a higher sensitivity both Shigella strains to ampicillin, nalidixic acid, tetracycline and rifampicin had the highest resistance of all the 12 antibiotic agents. The two Shigella’s resistance rates had significant differences in the Cefalotin, cefotaxime, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, cotrimoxazole(p< 0.05). Shigella had serious multi-drug resistance.Most of 30 Shigella flexneri strains had the set1 and ipaH genes. 13 Shigella sonnei strains did not amplify any bands , most Shigella sonnei strains only had the ipaH gene by PCR test.Conclusion Shigella resistance to antibiotics was very serious, the Shigella sonnei and Shigella flexneri were significantly different in the resistance patterns.Shigella flexneri strains had a high carrier rate of virulence genes, the majority of strains containing 2-3 virulence genes,and the virulence phenotype was complex; Shigella sonnei strains had a low carrier rate of virulence genes maybe associated with the mild symptoms.[Key words] Shigella flexneri; Shigella sonnei; Drug resistance; virulence genes
