Abstract:ObjectiveThe study was designed to master the popularization of iodized salt with down-regulated iodine concentration based on the new standard and to determine urinary iodine levels of the children in Hubei Province so as to provide basis for formulating prevention and treatment strategies for iodine deficiency. Methods According to the Monitoring Scheme of Iodine Deficiency, edible iodized salt was collected from residences in 103 counties (cities, districts) of 17 cities (states) in Hubei Province in 2012- 2014 and was determined for iodine concentration. 30 counties were selected by simple random sampling and urine specimens were collected from 100 children aged 8-10 years for each monitored county to test their urinary iodine levels . Results The coverage rate and report rate of iodized salt monitoring were both 100% in Hubei Province in 2012-2014. Salt iodine medians in the 3 years were 30 mg/kg, 25.8 mg/kg and 24.6 mg/kg respectively, showing a decreasing trend, and the difference was statistically different (P<0.01); Urinary iodine median of the monitored children fell from 300.78μg/L to 270.73μg/L, and it was significantly different among the 3 years (P <0.01). Conclusions After the implementation of new standard for iodized salt, coverage rate of iodized salt and consumption rate of qualified iodized salt are both at high level in Hubei Province. The salt iodine median declines year by year. However, children’s iodine nutrition is still higher than the optimum level. Iodized salt monitoring still needs to be strengthened to provide a scientific basis for prevention and control of iodine deficiency.
