Abstract:Objective To investigate the awareness of risk factors associated with dog-induced injury and its incidence among community residents in Nanshan District, Shenzhen City, and to provide a scientific basis for formulating dog-induced injury intervention measures in the communities. Methods A random cluster sampling method was used to select community residents in Nanshan District, Shenzhen City, and then a face-to-face questionnaire survey was conducted. Results A total of 3,532 community residents were surveyed. The awareness rates of 15 risk factors related to dog-induced injury were between 41.00% and 64.61%. The status of awareness showed statistically singificant differences between dog owners and residents without dogs. The incidence rate of dog-induced injury in the past 2 years was 0.88%, and 35.48% of the residetns with dog-induced injury attributed to their own dogs. 51.61% of the dog-induced injuries happened in the housing estate. 67.74% of the dogs that caused the injuries were small- and medium-size dogs. Conclusions The awareness rates of risk factors associated with dog-induced injury among the community residents in Nanshan District, Shenzhen City still remain to improve. All the residents, especially the dog owners, should realize the risk and prevention measures of dog-induced injury; meanwhile, government departments need to formulate prevention-control policies and put into practice.
