Abstract:Objective To investigate the prevalence of smoking and its influencing factors among college students in Guangzhou so as to provide scientific evidence for effective control of smoking. Methods Cluster random sampling method was used to select 850 college students from a comprehensive university in Guangzhou. The prevalence of smoking was surveyed, and the data were statistically analyzed by SPSS13.0 software. Results The smoking rate of the college students surveyed was 15.4%, with 21.6% for males and 9.4% for females. There were statistically significant differences in the smoking rate among students with different genders, native places, grades and monthly expenses (P<0.05) as well as among students with different cognition and attitudes towards smoking (P<0.05). Holding positive attitudes towards tobacco hazard knowledge and smoking ban (considering smoking as an addictive disease, minding people smoking around and supporting anti-tobacco advertising, etc) was conducive to reducing the college students' smoking behavior. Multivariant logistic regression analysis showed that factors like native place, perceived health status and academic achievement were factors influencing the college students' smoking. The risk of smoking among students from HongKong was 4.45(1.67-11.87) times that of students from cities or towns of mainland China. It was higher in students with perceived very poor health condition than in students with perceived good health condition (OR=1.98, 95%CI: 1.32-2.24). Suffering from diarrhea/cold more than 3 times within half a year was a protective factor for smoking(OR=0.06, 95%CI: 0.02-0.16). The risk of smoking in college students with chronic diseases was 3.54 (1.55-8.05) times that of students without chronic diseases, in students with night sleep = 6 hours and ≥8 hours respectively 16.35(4.39-60.84) and 5.31(1.27-22.25) times that of those with night sleep < 6 hours, as well as in students with academic achievement within the lower one-third level in the class 4.20(1.33-13.27) times that of those within the upper one-third. Conclusions The smoking rate of the students in the comprehensive university is high. Native place, self-conscious health condition, frequency of diarrhea and cold, underlying chronic disease, night sleep hours and academic achievmentare influencing factors of smoking. In order to reduce the prevalence of tobacco smoking in the university, it is necessary to actively conduct effective health education and behavior interventions targeted on the college students, especially on male students from HongKong, with perceived very poor health condition and with academic achievement within the lower one-third level in the class.
