Abstract:Objective To understand the epidemiological characteristics of scrub typhus in Shenzhen City from 2006 to 2013 and to explore its spatial distribution characteristics using geographic information system (GIS) technology, so as to provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of scrub typhus. Methods The spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of scrub typhus in Shenzhen City in 2006-2013 were described, and the high risk areas were determined by spatial autocorrelation analysis. Results From 2006 to 2013, 127 cases of scrub typhus were reported in Shenzhen City, including 1 death. The average annual incidence was 0.15/100,000. The incidence showed an increasing trend over time (P<0.05). The highest incidence rate (0.43/100,000) occurred in 2013. Nanshan district had the highest average annual incidence (0.593/100,000). Its incidence primarily concentrated from May to November (86.6%). The male/female case ratio was 1.17:1. Patients were mainly manual workers, homemakers and unemployed persons (totally 68 cases, accounting for 53.54%). The Moran’s I overall statistical quantity was 0.548 (P=0.05). The areas that had a local autocorrelation value greater than 1 included the following ten streets: Xixiang, Xili, Taoyuan, Xin'an, Nantou, Shahe, Yuehai, Nanshan, Zhaoshang, Shekou. These streets were the cluster areas of scrub typhus cases in Shenzhen City. Conclusions The incidence of scrub typhus in Shenzhen City increases annually in 2006-2013, and exhibits distinct seasonal variation. Integrating the use of spatial autocorrelation analysis allows timely identification of the disease’s clustering and determination of areas of high incidence and high risk. During the epidemic season, efforts should be made to strengthen health education on key populations, reduce the likelihood of contraction, and control the occurrence and spread of scrub typhus.
