Abstract:Objective To explore the features of prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and their affecting factors among the Kirgiz people in Xinjiang. Methods A total of 85,367 Kirgiz residents aged ≥ 18 years who participated in the resident health examination in the Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture in 2020 were selected as the research subjects. Xinjiang resident health examination questionnaire was used to conduct a questionnaire survey, and physical examination and laboratory test were performed. The factors influencing T2DM in the Kirgiz residents were analyzed by binary Logistic regression model. Results The prevalence rate of T2DM was 4.49% in the Kirgiz residents, and higher in males than in females (5.05% vs. 3.97%, χ2=57.366, P<0.01). The standardized prevalence rate was 4.91% in the Kirgiz residents, 4.87% in males and 4.05% in females. The prevalence rate of T2DM increased with the increase of age, and there were statistically significant differences in the prevalence rate of T2DM among different ages and between genders (all P<0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis displayed that the increase of age (ORmore than 70-year-old=7.246, 95%CI:5.765-9.109), low education level (ORjunior middle school=1.136, 95%CI:1.030-1.252), cadres of government organs (OR=1.302, 95%CI:1.091-1.553), agricultural, forestry and animal husbandry workers (OR=1.234, 95%CI: 1.076-1.416), urban residents (OR=1.691, 95%CI:1.520-1.882), obesity (OR=1.482, 95%CI:1.152-1.905), abdominal obesity (OR=1.373, 95%CI:1.252-1.504), family history of diabetes (OR=3.222, 95%CI: 2.612-3.975), hypertension (OR=1.807, 95%CI:1.669-1.957), hyperlipidemia (OR=1.769, 95%CI:1.644-1.903), meat-based diet (OR=1.523, 95%CI:1.358-1.709) and oil dependence (OR=1.446, 95%CI:1.248-1.675) were all risk factors for T2DM in the Kirgiz residents, whereas females (OR=0.793, 95%CI:0.738-0.853), regular physical exercise (OR=0.780, 95%CI:0.693-0.879) and vegetarian-based diet (OR=0.779, 95%CI:0.657-0.924) were protective factors. Conclusion The detection rate of T2DM in the Kirgiz residents in Xinjiang is low, and the incidence is related to many factors. It is necessary to advocate the favorable lifestyle in local residents so as to effectively prevent the occurrence and development of T2DM.
