Abstract:Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of solar therapy on agitation behavior in patients with senile dementia. Methods Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CBM, CNKI, Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, and VIP database were retrieved. Statistical analysis was performed using RevMan5.4 software. Results Six articles (5 in English and 1 in Chinese) were included, and solar therapy could improve agitation behavior in Alzheimer’s patients (standardized mean difference (SMD)=-0.43, 95%CI:-0.80--0.06, P=0.02). The results of subgroup analysis displayed that compared with the control group, there were statistically significant differences in sunlight cycle > 4 weeks (SMD=-0.44, 95%CI:-0.75--0.13, P=0.006), sunlight twice a day (SMD=-0.47, 95%CI:-0.92--0.03, P=0.04), and sunlight intensity≤1,000 lux (SMD=-0.49, 95%CI:-0.86--0.12, P=0.01). The results of sunlight time subgroup analysis displayed that no statistically significant differences were found between sunlight time < 2 hours (SMD=-0.58, 95%CI:-1.20-0.04, P=0.07) and sunlight time ≥ 2 hours (SMD=-0.27, 95%CI:-0.71-0.16, P=0.21). Conclusion Solar therapy can improve agitation behavior of patients with Alzheimer's disease. It is recommended that solar therapy should be performed based on sunlight cycle >4 weeks, sunlight twice a day, and sunlight intensity ≤1,000 lux.
