Abstract:Objective To understand the awareness of knowledge about tuberculosis prevention and control among high school students, and to evaluate the effect of a tuberculosis health promotion program on improving the knowledge of tuberculosis in high school students. Methods A cluster sampling method was adopted to conduct tuberculosis health promotion activities among high school students in a county of Hunan Province. A self-made tuberculosis knowledge questionnaire was used to compare the awareness rate of core knowledge about tuberculosis in high school students before and after implementing the tuberculosis health promotion program. Results A total of 502 students from 9 high school classes were enrolled to serve as the research subjects, including 172 (34.26%) freshmen of senior high school, 184 (36.65%) sophomores and 146 (29.08%) senior three students. There were 260 (51.79%) male students and 242 (45.21%) female ones. Before implementing the tuberculosis health promotion program, the overall awareness rate of core knowledge about tuberculosis in the respondents was 55.00%. The awareness rates of 8 knowledge items ranged from 42.23%-75.10%, of which the awareness rate of therapeutic norms and efficacy of pulmonarytuberculosis was the lowest (42.23%), while the awareness rate of tuberculosis transmission route was the highest (75.10%). There was a statistically significant difference in the awareness rate of knowledge between two genders (χ2=6.795, P=0.009), and the rate was higher in female students (57.08%) than in male ones (52.98%). The awareness rates of different grades showed statistically significant differences (χ2=14.561, P=0.001), with the highest awareness rate in grade twelfth (58.73%) and the lowest awareness rate in grade tenth (51.24%). After implementing the tuberculosis health promotion program, the overall awareness rate of tuberculosis knowledge was 86.65%, and the awareness rates of 8 knowledge items ranged from 80.28% to 94.82%. No statistically significant differences were found in the awareness rate of tuberculosis knowledge among students of different genders, ethnic groups, residence places and grades (all P>0.05). The awareness rates of 8 knowledge items and the total awareness rate after implementing the tuberculosis health promotion program were significantly higher than those before the implementation (P=0.001). Before implementing the tuberculosis health promotion program, the main channels for students to acquire tuberculosis knowledge were leaflets, foldouts, newspapers and other publicity materials (57.97%). After implementing the tuberculosis health promotion program, Internet, Wechat and Douyin were the most popular ways for students to obtain the knowledge (80.48%). Conclusion Implementing the tuberculosis health promotion program is an effective measure to improve the awareness rate of tuberculosis knowledge among the high school students. Approaches such as the micro-film, Wechat and Douyin are considered the most effective ways for the high school students to gain tuberculosis knowledge.
