Relationship of screen time and physical activity with self-rated health among college students during the prevalence of COVID-19

Abstract:Objective To investigate the association of screen time and physical activity (PA) with self-rated health among college students during the prevalence of COVID-19, and to explore the moderating role of PA in screen time and self-rated health. Methods A self-designed questionnaire, Physical Activity Rating Scale-3 and Self-rated Health Measurement Scale were used to conduct questionnaire surveys among 12,447 college students. A linear stratified regression model was employed to analyze the regulatory effect of PA in screen time and self-rated health. Results The screen time of the college students was (8.1±3.0)h/d, and the score of physical activity was (18.1±9.2)points. The scores of self-rated physical health, mental health and social adaptation were (71.6±9.2), (58.2±10.4) and (62.3±11.8)points, respectively. Screen time was a negative predictor of self-rated health, but PA was a positive predictor of self-rated health. There was a statistically significant difference in mental health in the interaction between screen time and physical activity (β=-0.161, P<0.05). Conclusion The present study reveals the negative moderating role of PA between screen time and mental health.
