Abstract:Objective To investigate the prevalence of injuries and injury-risk behavior among college students in Guangzhou so as to provide a theoretical basis for conducting the targeted intervention measures. Methods A randomized cluster sampling method was used to select 1,500 students from 3 universities in Guangzhou, and a questionnaire survey on the prevalence of injuries and injury-risk behavior was conducted. Results The prevalence rates of injuries and injury-risk behavior among the college students in Guangzhou was 25.60% and 84.66% respectively. The top 3 types of injuries among the college students were sprains (30.65%), falls (27.42%) and hard or sharp injuries (10.75%). The top 3 injury-risk behavior included non-standard movement (38.40%), fight (34.39%) and learning/living under high pressure (31.77%). With the increase of types of injury-risk behavior, the prevalence rate of injuries was also increased (rs=0.21, P<0.00). Cycling violations, non-standard movement, being bullied and other injury-risk behavior were the risk factors influencing the occurrence of injuries (OR=1.35~1.82). Conclusions The prevalence rates of injuries and injury-risk behavior is high among the college students in Guangzhou. It is necessary to conduct the targeted education concerning health and security knowledge among college students, especially in the male freshmen and sophomores, and increase their self-protective abilities.
