Abstract：Objective To understand the characteristics of prevalence of depression among senior citizens aged over 60 years in Hunan Province, and to provide a basis for conducting psychological care in the elderly. Methods A convenience sampling method was used to select 13,362 senior citizens aged over 60 years from 52 communities/villages in 42 districts of 14 cities or prefectures in Hunan Province. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9)was used to screen depression symptom and assess the current status of depression, and the influencing factors were analyzed. Results The detection rate of depression in the elderly aged over 65 years in Hunan Province was 8.79%. There were statistically significant differences in the detection rate of depression among the elderly with different gender, age, educational background, way of living, relationship with their children, spouse and friends, prevalence of chronic diseases and participating in recreational activities (all P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the protective factors against depression among the elderly aged 65 years and above in Hunan Province were physical quality (OR=0.509, 95%CI:0.410-0.633), often taking part in recreational activities (OR=0.789, 95%CI:0.636-0.980), having a satisfactory relationship with spouse (OR=0.710, 95%CI:0.567-0.890), having a satisfactory relationship with their children (OR=0.717, 95%CI: 0.588-0.874), having a satisfactory relationship with friends (OR=0.711, 95%CI:0.590-0.858), having an educational background of high school and above (OR=0.719, 95%CI: 0.602-0.860), the male (OR=0.790, 95%CI: 0.690-0.903) and living in cities. Conclusion The detection rate of depression symptom in Hunan Province in 2019 was low. It is necessary to pay more attention to the rural, unhealthy and female elderly.
