Abstract:Objective To investigate the current status of nutrition knowledge level of community residents in Futian District, Shenzhen City, and to evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition education intervention on improving their nutrition knowledgeso as to provide a basis for guiding the community residents to establish correct dietary patterns and healthy diet habits. Methods We conducted training concerning nutrition knowledge and questionnaire surveys among community residents who received training voluntarily in 10 selected communities in Futian District from May to July, 2016. The effectiveness of the training was evaluated by comparing the questionnaire correct rates before and after the training. Results Among the 524 surveyed residents with effective retrieved questionnaires, there were statistically significant differences in the scores of diet-related knowledge before the training among residents with different ages and education levels (both P<0.05), while the scores of diet-related knowledge after the training showed statistically significant differences only among residents with different ages (t=3.54, P=0.00). The average scores before and after the training were (49.46±16.28) and (73.75±13.80) respectively, showing a statistically significant difference (t=26.06, P=0.00). As for the residents’ awareness of diet-related knowledge, the correct answer rates of most of the questions after the training were significantly higher than those before the training. Conclusions The level of nutrition knowledge of the community residents in Futian District, Shenzhen City is relatively low. Nutrition education can serve to improve the residents’ nutrition knowledge level, promote their health and improve the quality of life.
