Status of health literacy and its influencing factors among parents of preschool children

Abstract:Objective To understand the status of health literacy and its influencing factors among parents of preschoolers in Guangming District of Shenzhen City so as to provide a basis for conducting targeted health education. Methods A stratified cluster random sampling method was used to survey status quo of health literacy among 4,299 parents of preschoolers selected from 13 kindergartens in Guangming District of Shenzhen City. Results Among the 4,299 parents of preschool children, 26.4% (1,133/4,299) of the parents had adequate health literacy according to the evaluation criteria. The proportions of having health knowledge and concept, healthy lifestyle and behavior, and health literacy skills were 66.1%, 28.0% and 49.0%, respectively. Results from multivariate analysis showed that factors as gender, age, household registration, educational background and vocation were correlated with the health literacy levels of the parents of preschoolers. Conclusions The health literacy levels of the parents of preschoolers are improved, but the levels of healthy lifestyle and behavior, and health literacy skills are relatively low. It is necessary to conduct health education targeted at the main influencing factors and different parents so as to further improve the health literacy levels of the parents of preschoolers.
