Abstract:Objective To detect the HCV-RNA viral load among anti-HCV positive attendants in a methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) clinic in Guangxi, and to explore its associated influencing factors. Methods We surveyed anti-HCV positive attendants in a methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) clinic in Guangxi Province. Their information about general demography, drug addiction and HIV infection status was collected, and laboratory tests including HCV-RNA viral load, blood routine and liver function were conducted. Results A total of 257 anti-HCV positive attendants received the above-mentioned laboratory tests. Among them, 209 (81.32%) were HCV-RNA-positive, 48 (18.68%) were HIV positive, and 139 (54.09%)had anAST/ALT ratio above 1. Along with the growth of HCV-RNA viral load, the rates of abnormal AST value, abnormal ALT value and HCV/HIV co-infection all increased (Chi-square test for trend test, all P<0.05). Conclusions Most of the anti-HCV positive attendants in the MMT clinic are patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection, and some of them have already developed into liver fibrosis or cirrhosis. In addition, the viral load is correlated with abnormal AST value, abnormal ALT value, and HIV/HCV co-infection. It is suggested that more attention should be paid to HCV prevention and treatment so as to contain further spread of HCV.
