Online survey of citizens' knowledge, attitude and practice of prevention and control measures against COVID-19 epidemic in Hunan province

Abstract:Objective To investigate Hunan citizens' knowledge, attitude and practice of prevention and control measures in response to coronavirus disease 2019 (shortened to COVID-19) epidemic and their effectiveness evaluation and satisfaction towards the measures during the epidemic so as to provide a scientific basis for formulating prevention and control measures in the next phase. Methods An anonymous online survey was conducted in Hunan. Self-designed questionnaires were distributed through the online questionnaire platform, and the survey contents included general information, attitude, behavior and satisfaction towards the epidemic prevention and control measures, awareness and behavior of personal protection, and problems andsuggestions in prevention and control work. Descriptive analysis was conducted for data collected from questions with options. Text data were then further analyzed. Sentences were divided into phrases or words and their frequencies were calculated. KMeans clustering method was used to further explore similar views. Results A total of 7,585 valid questionnaires were finally collected, and participants were mainly employees in government institutions (27.20%), the self-employed (18.89%), enterprise staff (11.72%) and students (10.34%). 99.88% of the participants agreed with the necessity to wear face mask when going out, with79.91% choosing disposable surgical mask and 16.47% protective face mask for medical use. 89.57% of the participants thought that chlorine-containing disinfectant could be used for domestic disinfection, with 86.32% thinking medical alcohol. 94.23% of the participants were satisfied with all kinds of prevention and control measures against COVID-19 epidemic, and 88.27% of them agreed with a well implementing status of the containment measures. 94% of the participants supported the policy to postpone the work and school starting day. 96.97% of the participants supported the policy of outdoor activity restriction. Over 99.30% participants agreed and cooperated with work such as civil health status registration and monitoring. Text analysis showed that words and phrases with high frequency were control and prevention, epidemic, going outdoor, face mask, etc. 10 views were extracted finally, including encouraging sentences, restricting outdoor activities, keeping strengthening prevention work and staying alert, wearing face mask to prevent disease, hoping a speedy ending for the outbreak, intensifying containment propaganda, actively cooperating with the disease prevention and control, enhancing COVID-19 containing measures, being very hard to purchase a face mask and postponing the school starting day. Conclusions Hunan citizens were well known about and satisfied with prevention and control measures against COVID-19 epidemic, with highly cooperating with the public prevention and control work. They were optimistic about the epidemic situation; meanwhile, they kept their mind staying alert for the containment of the epidemic.
