Methods Descriptive epidemiological method was used to statistically analyze public health emergencies in schools in Zhuhai city from 2005 to 2018. Results A total of 98 public health emergencies were reported in schools in Zhuhai city from 2005 to 2018, with 5,266 cases and without death case. 89.80% of the reported events were infectious diseases, which were mainly respiratory and intestinal diseases. 10.20% of the reported incidents were foodborne diseases, which were mainly caused by microorganism. As for infectious disease events, the onset time was concentrated in March-May as well as December of previous year and January of next year. Most of the events occurred in primary schools (50.00%) and childcare institutions (21.43%). The leading diseases reported by childcare institutions, primary and secondary schools and vocational colleges/universities were hand-foot-mouth disease (61.90%), influenza (31.58%/30.61%) and norovirus-related infectious diarrhoea (66.67%). The median intervention time for the 98 incidents was 7.90 days, and the median duration was 9.97 days. Conclusions Respiratory and intestinal infectious diseases should be the focus of prevention and control of public health emergencies in schools. The duration of the epidemics is affected by the duration of intervention. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the early identification and timely reporting of school outbreaks and implement various prevention and control measures.
