Risk factors of measles among children in Shufu county, Xinjiang

Abstract:Objective To explore the factors influencing measles incidence in children in Shufu county, Xinjiang, and to provide evidence for formulating measles prevention and control strategies. Methods Using a 1:1 matched case-control study, 125 laboratory-confirmed measles cases aged 8 months to 14 years and 125 control cases in Shufu county, Xinjiang from 2016 to 2018 were selected as the surveyed subjects. A questionnaire was designed to retrospectively collect relevant data which might affect the incidence of measles in children, and conditional logistic regression was used to analyze the influencing factors. Results Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the hospital visiting history in the past one month was a risk factor for measles in children (OR=4.876, 95%CI:1.350-17.608), while indoor ventilation (OR=0.103, 95%CI:0.039-0.269), parents’ qualified awareness of measles (OR=0.187, 95%CI:0.071-0.493) and children’s measles component vaccination (OR=0.475, 95%CI:0.290-0.778) were protective factors for measles in children. Conclusions It is necessary to enhance the administration of nosocomial infections in hospitals in Shufu county and strengthen publicity and education of measles prevention and control so as to comprehensively improve the measles vaccination rate in children.
