Abstract:Objective To study the antibacterial efficacy of nisin combined with an extract of Sophora flavescens and Phellodendron amurense. Methods Bacteriostatic test was used to measure the antibacterial efficacy of using nisin or an extract of Sophora flavescens and Phellodendron amurense alone towards Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). And the combined antibacterial efficacy of the above-mentioned three substances was explored by two-factor three-level orthogonal test design and graded inhibition concentration index. Results The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of nisin to S. aureus and E. coli was 0.9375 mg/ml and 7.5 mg/ml, respectively. The MIC of the extract of Sophora flavescens and Phellodendron amurense to S. aureus and E. coli was 3.125 % and 6.25 %, respectively. The antibacterial effects of nisin combined with the extract of Sophora flavescens and Phellodendron amurense on S. aureus and E. coli were all 0.5<fractional inhibitory concentration index≤1.0, which showed an additive effect. Conclusions Compared with using nisin or the extract of Sophora flavescens and Phellodendron amurense alone, the antibacterial efficacy is enhanced when nisin is used in combination with the extract of Sophora flavescens and Phellodendron amurense.
