Correlation of eye health with visual acuity among pupils in junior grades in a district of Hangzhou city

Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between eye health and visual acuity and the factors influencing poor vision among pupils in junior grades in Hangzhou, and to provide references for conducting the targeted vision intervention. Methods A stratified random cluster sampling method was used to select 980 students from the third grade of three primary schools in Yuhang district of Hangzhou city in August-December 2018. Vision measurement and questionnaire surveys were conducted, and the contents of the self-designed structured questionnaire included general information and eye-related knowledge, attitude and behavior. Univariate and multivariate unconditional logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the scores of eye-related knowledge, attitude and behavior and total visual acuity score, and the relationship between other factors and poor vision. Results The poor vision rate of the pupils from the third grade of three primary schools in Yuhang district of Hangzhou city was 42.99%. No statistically significant difference was found in the incidence rate of poor vision among different schools (χ2=3.789, P=0.150), but a statistically significant difference was found in the degrees of different types of poor vision (χ2=25.472, P=0.000). There were statistically significant differences in the scores of eye-related knowledge and behavior and total visual acuity score among visually impaired students (t=4.676, t=15.619, t=10.033, all P<0.001) as well as in the scores of eye-related knowledge and behavior and total visual acuity score among pupils with different degrees of visual acuity (F=7.669, F=117.400, F=51.994, all P<0.001). Parents with or withoutmyopia and eye-related knowledge and behavior were associated with poor vision(OR=1.370, 95%CI=1.130-1.659, OR=0.973, 95%CI=0.960-0.986, OR=0.924, 95%CI=0.912-0.936). In the eye-related behavior factors, the main factor influencing poor vision were timely performing treatment and examination when the visual acuity declined, lying prone on the bed for reading and writing or using electronic products, reading and writing or using electronic products while lying down, reading and writing or using electronic products in the places with dim light, and resting the eyes after continuously using the eyes for 30 minutes (looking far into the distance, closing the eyes, etc.). Conclusions The scores of eye-related knowledge, attitude and behavior in pupils in junior grades are negatively correlated with the incidence rate of poor vision. The higher the score, the lower the incidence rate of poor vision, especially in eye-related knowledge and behavior.
