Abstract:Objective To investigate the current status, influencing factors and demands of disaster literacy in college students, and to explore the feasibility of disaster education among them. Methods Four hundred and seventeen college students were randomly selected in the southern region of Jiangsu Province in September, 2016, and the self-designed disaster literacy questionnaire was used to investigate the status of disaster literacy. Results The total score of disaster literacy in the college students was (92.27±17.40). No statistically significant difference was found in the score of disaster literacy among students from different grades (P>0.05). The knowledge and behavior scores of disaster literacy were higher in medical students than in non-medical students, with statistically significant differences (both P<0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed having the family disaster plan(P=0.00), taking part in training exercises(P=0.01)and having disaster response capability by self-assessment (P=0.01) had predictive effects on disaster literacy of the college students. 96.6% of the college students had demands for disaster education. Conclusions Disaster literacy of the college students in the southern region of Jiangsu Province in 2016 was at an intermediate level, and it was influenced by many factors. There were high demands for disaster education among most of the college students.
