Abstract:Objective To investigate the carrying status and drug susceptibility of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated in the nasopharynx of school children aged 6-13 years in Zhongshan City in 2016. Methods According to the total number of students in each school and the number of students in each grade, a total of 253 school-age children were selected from 3 primary schools in Zhongshan City from October to December in 2016. Oropharyngeal swabs were collected to detect Streptococcus pneumoniae, and then antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed. Results The positive carrying rates of Streptococcus pneumoniae in children aged 6-, 9- and 12-13 years were 12.8% (10/78), 15.89%(17/107) and 7.35% (5/68) respectively, showing statistically significant differences among different age groups (χ2=9.441, P=0.043). But no statistically significant difference was found in the carrying rate of Streptococcus pneumoniae between males and females with different ages (P>0.05). 50 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae were highly sensitive to amoxicillin (100%), levofloxacin (100%), ceftriaxone (82%) and chloramphenicol (86%), but highly resistant to erythromycin (96%) and azithromycin (96%) and tetracycline (78%). Conclusions Streptococcus pneumonia infection in the nasopharynx of school children aged 6-13 years in Zhongshan City in 2016 was prevalent; moreover, it is highly sensitive to amoxicillin, levofloxacin, penicillin, ceftriaxone and chloramphenicol.
