Characteristics of HIV-1 transmitted drug resistance in Hunan Province, 2021

Abstract:Objective To understand the epidemic characteristics of HIV-1 transmitted drug resistance in Hunan Province in 2021, and to provide data support for optimizing HIV antiretroviral therapy. Methods Newly reported people living with HIV-1 in Hunan Province in 2021 were recruited. HIV-1 DNA was extracted from whole blood samples, the sequence of pol gene segment was sequenced by polymerase chain reaction and Sanger sequencing, and the sequence was uploaded to Stanford HIV drug resistance database for drug resistance analysis. Results A total of 348 antiretroviral-naive patients were included, of which 334 subjects were successfully sequenced. 14 (4.2%, 14/334) subjects were found to have low-, medium- and high-drug resistance, of which 13 (3.9%, 13/334) subjects had nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) resistance mutation sites, predominantly K103, accounting for 3.3% (11/334). 2 subjects (0.6%, 2/334) had nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) resistance mutation sites, including M184I (0.6%, 2/334) and K65R (0.3%, 1/334). Conclusion HIV-1 transmitted drug resistance in the antiretroviral-naive population in Hunan Province in 2021 was at a low prevalence level. HIV-1 transmitted drug resistance surveillance is recommended prior to the implementation of antiretroviral therapy.
