Cluster analysis on epidemiological characteristics of hand-foot-mouth disease in Banan District of Chongqing Municipality, 2016-2020

Abstract:Objective To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) in Banan District of Chongqing Municipality from 2016 to 2020, and to provide a scientific basis for establishment of prevention and control measures. Methods Cluster analysis method was used to analyze the epidemiological features of HFMD such as occurrence months, age groups and area. Results The reported incidence rate of HFMD in Banan District of Chongqing was the highest in 2018, but the lowest in 2020. The number of reported cases in different months and different age groups, and the annual average incidence rate of counties/streets were all clustered into three categories by unordered cluster analysis. The number of reported cases in different months was clustered into six categories by ordered cluster analysis, while the number of reported cases in different age groups into five categories. HFMD had more reported cases in children aged 0-4 years in May-July and October-November, and incidence rate was found to be higher in Lijiatuo Street and Longzhouwan Street. Conclusion Prevention and control measures for COVID-19 in Banan District of Chongqing Municipality should be strengthened constantly; moreover, targeted measures should be taken to prevent HFMD in key population and districts during key months, and high peak incidence years should be noted.
