Abstract:Objective To explore the characteristics of psychosomatic symptoms and the relationship between psychosomatic symptoms and coping styles in Chinese servicemen taking part in escort missions against piracy. Methods Symptom Check List-90 (SCL-90), Coping Style Questionnaire (CSQ) and General Information Questionnaire were used to assess and analyze 233 warship servicemen selected by cluster sampling. The scores of servicemen escorting for the first time and the second time were compared. Results The scores of 10 factors of SCL-90 of the servicemen were all lower than those of the Chinese military norm, with statistically significant differences (all P<0.05). The scores of obsessive-compulsive symptom, interpersonal relationship, depression, anxiety, hostility, terror, paranoid and psychosis factors of the servicemen were all significantly lower than those of the Chinese local norm (P<0.05) except the scores of somatization and additional-item factors (P>0.05). No statistically significant differences were observed in the score of each factor in SCL-90 between servicemen escorting for the first and second time (P>0.05), but the score of fantasy factor of CSQ was lower in servicemen escorting for the first time than in those escorting for the second time, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). Correlation analysis showed that the scores of all factors of SCL-90 were significantly and negatively associated with the scores of problem-solving and help-seeking factors of CSQ (r=-0.003~-0.156, P<0.05), but significantly and positively associated with the scores of self-accusation, fantasy, avoidance and rationalization factors (r=0.291-0.533, P<0.05). Conclusions The servicemen performing anti-piracy escort missions are in good psychosomatic condition. We find no significant differences in the psychosomatic status between the servicemen escorting for the first and second time. Mature coping style is an important factor for maintaining good psychosomatic condition.
