Abstract:Objective An occupational contact dermatitis outbreak in a workplace was reported , an investigation was conducted to identify the possible pathogenicity, and corresponding prevention and control measures were taken. MethodsDescriptive epidemiologic studies and case-control study were conducted to describe distribution characteristics of cases and explore the pathogenic factors. The component of suspected pathogenicity was analyzed by gas chromatography. The patch tests among the sensitized patients were used to identify the sensitizer. Results In 25 cases of dermatitis patients, there were 22 cases of occupational irritant contact dermatitis and 3 cases of occupational (irritant and allergic) contact dermatitis. The association with the esterified liquid and the risk of contact dermatitis was statistically significant (OR=96,P<0.001). The results of gas chromatography analysis showed that there were 94.04% dimethyl maleate, 3.22% methanol,2.26% dimethylfumarate, 0.06% γ-butyrolactone, 0.24% methoxysuccinate and 0.01% o-xylene in the esterified liquid. The results of the patch tests showed that dimethylfumarate was the sensitizer. Conclusion Dimethyl maleate and dimethylfumarate may be the cause of the occupational contact dermatitis outbreak.
