Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of sleep time on human sperm parameters, morphology and sperm DNA integrity. Methods Five hundred and eighty-one men were divided into three groups according to their sleep status investigated by questionnaires Group I (normal sleep group), Group II (mild sleep deprivation group) and Group III (severe sleep deprivation group). The sperm concentration, motility and progressive motility were detected by computer-assisted sperm analysis system (CASA). The sperm morphology was analyzed by Diff-Quick staining and the sperm DNA integrity was measured by sperm chromatin dispersion assay. Results From Group I to Group III, the sperm concentrations ((70.5±14.2)×106/ml, (65.7±11.2) ×106/ml, (53.8±12.6)×106/ml), motility ((74.3±10.1)%, (70.5±14.5)%, (65.8±12.8)%) and progressive motility rates ((57.2±9.5)%, (54.5±11.3)%, (48.3±13.7)%) showed a declining tendency, with statistically significant differences (all P<0.01). Moreover, the sperm deformity rates ((91.0±20.5)%, (94.1±21.7)%) and sperm DNA fragmentation indexes ((17.5±10.1)%, (24.6±11.7)%) of the Group II and III showed statistically significant differences compared with those of Group I ((86.4±18.3)%, (16.8±9.5)%) (both P<0.05) . Conclusions Sleep time affects thesemen quality of males, and it may be one of the factors leading to decline in semen quality.
