Abstract:Objective To analyze the epidemiological features of gastroenteritis outbreaks in Pudong New Area, Shanghai and provide basis for gastroenteritis outbreak prevention and control. Methods Data of gastroenteritis outbreaks from 2014 to 2015 in Pudong New Area, Shanghai was input into the database and analyzed. Results A total of 45 gastroenteritis outbreaks occurred from 2014 to 2015 in Pudong New Area, in which 39(86.67%) occurred in primary and secondary schools and preschools. Gastroenteritis outbreaks in November and December accounted for more than half of the total outbreaks (23 outbreaks, 51.11%). In contrast, gastroenteritis outbreaks had troughs during the school summer and winter vacation (February, June, July and August). Outbreak duration was significantly longer in medical institutions and pension agencies than in other agencies (χ2=8.34,P=0.040). Norovirus was detected in 34(75.56%) outbreaks. Pathogens spred through contact or aerosol in 42 (93.33%) outbreaks. Gastroenteritis incidence in outbreaks which were transmitted through food or drinking water (6.19%) was higher than that in outbreaks transmitted through contact or aerosol(2.39%, χ2=168.18,P<0.001). Case isolation, preventive disinfection and terminal disinfection were not implemented timely and effectively in more than 80% of the outbreaks. Conclusions The gastroenteritis outbreaks from 2014 to 2015 in Pudong New Area had increased greatly than before. Winter and spring was the peak season. Norovirus was the primary pathogen in gastroenteritis outbreaks. The prevention and control of gastroenteritis outbreaks should focus on school students and kindergarten children. Pathogens spreading through contact or aerosol was the main transmission route.
