Questionnaire survey on oral hygiene behavior of children aged 3-5 years and their parents' knowledge and attitude in Tibet Autonomous Region

Abstract:Objective To collect the data about current status of oral health knowledge, attitude and behavior in children aged 3-5 years in Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), and to provide a basis for oral health care of ethnic minority preschoolers and dental caries prevention and treatment. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among parents of 3-5-year-old children in Tibet Autonomous Region by a multistage stratified sampling method. Oral health behavior of the children and their parents' knowledge awareness and attitude about oral health were analyzed. Epi Data 3.1 was used for data entry and SPSS 23.0 software for statistical analysis. Results A total of 1,368 valid questionnaires were retrieved. The proportion of respondents with good oral hygiene habits was low. The frequency of sugary foods consumption in the children was high. The utilization level of oral health service was lower than the national level. The awareness rate of oral health knowledge in the parents was only 47.9%. The vast majority of the parents held a positive attitude towards oral health. There were statistically significant differences between urban and rural areas in the age at which toothbrushing commenced,parent-ledtoothbrushing for children,the frequency of having sugary foods, medical seeking behavior, and awareness and attitude about oral health knowledge (all P<0.05), but no statistically significant difference was found between the sexes (P>0.05). Conclusion It is necessary to focus on strengthening oral health publicity and education among children and their parents in Tibet Autonomous Region, enhance diet guidance and increase medical investment, especially for rural population.
