Abstract:Objective To analyze the energy and calorigenic nutrient contents of the prepackaged foods (PFs) in the rural markets of Sichuan Province. Methods Simple random sampling method was used to select 4 cities (counties) in Sichuan Province from July to August, 2014. A small supermarket and a convenience store were sampled randomly in each county. We took photographs of the nutritional labels and collected information about the energy, calorigenic nutrient contents and the percentage of nutrient reference value(NRV%) of the PFs, and then graded the PFs according to the contents. The minimum serving price (MSP) was calculated based on the market prices of the PFs. Results Ten categories of PFs, including 275 kinds of foods, were investigated, and the energy, carbohydrate, fat and protein were 1,466 (290-2,018) kJ/100 g, 36.3 (8.3-60.5) g/100 g, 9.3(1.3-22.5) g/100 g and 5.2 (1.0-9.5) g/100 g respectively. The PFs with medium or high energy, carbohydrate, fat and protein accounted for 97.5% (268/275), 92.7% (255/275), 70.2% (193/275) and 65.5% (180/275) respectively. And the PFs with the MSP lower than 5 Yuan were more than those with the MSP of 5 Yuan and above. Conclusions The PFs with high energy, carbohydrate and fat in the rural area of Sichuan Province establish the affordable and high energy food environment for the rural children and adolescents, which may increase the risk of their overweight and obesity.
