Abstract:Objective To explore the influence of dietary behavior on obesity amongst medical students in a university in Wuhan City, and to provide a basis for guiding college students to change poor eating behavior and reducing the risk of obesity. Methods A cluster random sampling method was used to select medical students from a university in Wuhan City from September to December 2020. Body composition analyzer was employed to measure obesity indexes like body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat (PBF) and waist circumference (WC). The Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire was applied to investigating the scores of awareness of behaviors like cognitive restraint of eating (CR), uncontrolled eating (UE) and emotional eating (EE) among college students. Multiple linear regression and logistic regression were used for analyzing the association between eating behavior and obesity. Results A total of 1,079 subjects were enrolled into this study. The obesity rates based on diagnosing obesity in accordance with BMI, PBF and WC were 5.28%, 18.63% and 19.27% respectively. CR, UE and EE scores were all higher infemale students than male ones. Correlation analysis revealed that CR was positively correlated with BMI, PBF and WC, and EE was positively related to PBF. Moreover, CR was associated with the increased risk of obesity diagnosed based on PBF in male and female students and the general population. EE was associated with the increased risk of obesity diagnosed based on PBF and WC in female students (OR=1.105, 95%CI:1.013-1.205, OR=1.657, 95%CI:1.011-2.726). CR was associated with the increased risk of obesity diagnosed based on WC in male students (OR=1.240, 95%CI:1.035-1.285). Conclusion The prevalence rate of obesity among the college students is high, and the obesity problem diagnosed based on PBF and WC is prominent. CR and EE may increase the risk of suffering from obesity.
