Abstract:Objective To investigate and analyze the situation of illness-induced absenteeism in primary and middle school students in Shenzhen City during the 2014-2015 academic years so as to provide evidence for developing health interventionsamong primary and middle school students in Shenzhen City. Methods The information regarding illness-induced absenteeism in primary and middle school students from September 2014 to July 2015 in Shenzhen City was collected through the health surveillance system of students in Shenzhen, and then analyzed. Results The illness-induced absenteeism rateof primary and middle school students in Shenzhen Cityduring the 2014-2015 academic years was 22.08%, and the average illness-related absent days per person were 1.67 days. The illness-induced absenteeism rate was higher in the males than in the females, with a statistically significant difference (χ2=493.148,P<0.05). The illness-induced absenteeism rate of pupils was significantly higher than those of junior and senior middle school students (χ2=103.318,P<0.05). The peak incidence for the illness-induced absenteeism occurred in January, March and June. Conclusions It is necessary to strengthen prevention and control of infectious diseases and unintentional injuries in schools, enhance the preventive measures against influenza in spring and autumn and gradually improve the reporting links of the health surveillance system so as to do a better job in health prevention and treatment of primary and middle school students in Shenzhen City.
