Abstract:Objective To analyze the correlation between attitude toward training links and future career intention among rural order directional tuition-free medical students in Xinjiang so as to provide references for reforming the training mode of general practitioners in Xinjiang. Methods A stratified cluster sampling method was used to select 1,200 rural order directional tuition-free medical students in Xinjiang Medical University and School of Medicine, Shihezi University from March to June in 2015, and a questionnaire survey on basic personal information, performance, employment motivation and employment intention was conducted. Relationship between their attitude toward training links and future career intention was analyzed. Results Among the rural order directional tuition-free medical students surveyed, 57.3% knew about medical services in the rural areas, 70.2% thought that it was significant to have such a program, 50.5% were full of confidence in prospect of future career, and 17.1% lacked confidence in future career life and only 7.8% chose to continue working at grassroots after the required service period. The total score of attitude toward each link in the directional training was not high (55.19±12.52). Among the assessment of the directional training links, the score of evaluation mode was the highest (63.60±18.62), while the score teaching mode was the lowest (41.05±20.68). There was a positive correlation between the score of career intention and the total score of attitude toward training links as well as the score of attitude toward each link in the training (Pearson correlation coefficients were between 0.249 and 0.661). Grade and career intention were the factors influencing the total score of attitude toward training links. After controlling the impact of other indicators, every 1 point increase in the score of career intention was associated with an increment of 0.428 point in the total score of attitude toward training links, while every one grade increase was related to a fall of 1.079 points in the total score ofattitude toward training links. Conclusions The rural order directional tuition-free medical students’ attitude toward training links is correlated with future career intention. Greater efforts should be made in continued perfection of talent training scheme among the rural order directional tuition-free medical students in Xinjiang; meanwhile, special attention should be paid to developing the students’ awareness of serving in grassroots areas and professional ethics. Only by doing so, can we train the general practitioners who will remain and play a key role in health services in rural areas.
