Abstract:Objective The purpose of this study was to understand the situation of physical fitness among college students and to explore the impact of different levels of body mass index (BMI) on their physical fitness. Methods In accordance with the National Student Physical Health Standard revised in 2014, the indices which included BMI, vital capacity, 50 m sprint, standing long jump, sit and reach, 800/1 000 m running and pull-up/sit-up of physical fitness were measured and graded in 2014 and 2015 among students entering college in 2013. Based on the BMI set by World Health Organization, students were grouped into different body types. Comparisons of physical fitness among undergraduates of different body types were made.Results From 2014 to 2015, the ratio of being overweight or obese in male students rose from 14.1% to 15.9% (χ2=6.02,P=0.014) while that of female students changed little (χ2=3.69,P=0.055). Except for vital capacity, the performance of all physical fitness indices of normal weight group was significantly better than that of overweight and obese group (P<0.05). Changes of many physical fitness indices had been found in graduates of overweight and obese group from 2014 to 2015. In male students, the results of sit-and-reach increased from (11.9±6.9)cm to (13.2±6.2)cm (t=-3.59,P<0.001). The results of pull-up increased from 2(1,4) to 3(1,5) (z=10.09,P<0.001) while the time of 1 000 m running increased from (277.6±42.3)s to (289.4±45.6)s (t=-5.09,P<0.001). In female students, the time of 50 m sprint decreased from (9.4±0.9)s to (9.2±0.9)s(t=2.35,P=0.019) while the performance of sit-up increased from 32.6±8.0 to 36.4±7.0 (t=-5.31,P<0.001). The time of 800 meters running increasedfrom (257.2±29.0)s to (265.9±32.8)s (t=-2.59,P=0.003). Compared with the results in 2014, the composite score ofphysical fitness assessment in all male groups decreased (P<0.05). The mean score of maleoverweight and obese students decreased from 60.8±8.8 to 58.4±9.4 (t=5.15,P<0.001). Significant changes of composite score in female groups were not found (P>0.05). Conclusions From 2014 to 2015, the physical fitness level of male undergraduates of Class 2013in Qianhu campus of Nanchang Universitydeclines while that of female undergraduates changes little. Being overweight or obese is not conducive to health and development of college students. Specific measures should be taken to promote the status and development of students' physical fitness.
