Abstract:Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a cluster of metabolic disorders that include diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases. For several decades, the incidence and prevalence rates of MS show an upward tendency, which becomes a serious public health threat worldwide. Since the 1920s, a group of organizations have proposed different diagnostic criteria for MS according to the practical situations. The present studies indicate that MS is associated with behavior, socioeconomic condition, race, age and other factors, but conclusions in different studies are not always the same. Targeting the influencing factors of MS, enhancing propaganda and education among the susceptible population and advocating healthy lifestyle can effectively prevent and reduce the occurrence of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular events and improve the quality of life of residents.
