Abstract:Objective To investigate the influencing factors of newly identified human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Xiangyang City so as to provide evidence for developing prevention and control measures. Methods Snowball sampling method was used to recruit MSM in Xiangyang City. A questionnaire survey on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment knowledge and behavior was conducted. Blood samples were collected for testing the antibodies against HIV, syphilis and hepatitis C virus (HCV). The data were analyzed by descriptive, univariate and multivariate regression analyses. Results The estimated newly identified HIV seroprevalence in the MSM surveyed was 4.72% (95%CI=3.03%-6.42%). Univariate analysis showed that nine factors, including age, local residence time, educational background, score of AIDS-related knowledge, condom use in the last homosexual behavior, consistent condom use in homosexual behavior during the last six months, having been diagnosed to get sexually transmitted diseases in the last year, receiving peer education in the last year and syphilis infection, were associated with newly identified HIV infection (P≤0.10). Multivariate regression analysis showed that consistent condom use in homosexual behavior during the last six months (OR=0.16, 95%CI=0.05-0.54, P=0.00) was the protective factor of new HIV infection, with the greatest impact. Age of 60 years and above (OR=4.78, 95%CI=0.92-24.75, P=0.04), local residence time within 12 months (OR=4.36, 95%CI=1.37-13.81, P=0.01), educational background of junior middle school and below (OR=2.44, 95%CI=1.05-5.70, P=0.04) and syphilis infection (OR=4.44, 95%CI=1.25-15.77, P=0.02) were risk factors. Conclusions Newly identified HIV infection rate is high among the MSM in Xiangyang City. Effective comprehensive intervention measures should be taken to improve consistent condom use, especially in those with age of 60 years and above, local residence time within 12 months, educational background of junior middle school and below and syphilis infection.
