Abstract:Objective To investigate the incidence and influencing factors of injuries in primary and secondary schools in Nanshan District of Shenzhen City, and to provide a basis for prevention of injuries in primary and secondary schools. Methods Using random cluster sampling method, all students from 8 primary schools, 8 junior middle schools and 4 senior middle schools in Nanshan District of Shenzhen City were selected as the research subjects. The incidence of injuries in the past 12 months was investigated. A total of 3,169 qualified questionnaires were collected and statistically analyzed by SPSS 22.0. Results The incidence rate of injuries in the primary and secondary school students in Nanshan District of Shenzhen City was 7.79%. The incidence rate of injuries was higher in boys (8.54%) than in girls (6.95%), but no statistically significant difference was found (χ2=2.795, P=0.054). The incidence rate of injuries was higher in junior middle school students than in senior middle school students and pupils (14.50% vs. 5.29%, 14.50% vs. 5.37%, χ2=72.554, P<0.01). Injuries mainly occurred in schools (36.44%), followed by other places outside schools and homes (33.60%). Injuries occurred at home accounted for 29.96%. The top three causes of injuries were drop/fall (58.30%), knife/sharp instrument injury (11.34%) and blunt force injury (10.53%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that senior grades (OR=1.499, 95%CI:1.195-1.881), attending a day school (OR=3.206, 95%CI:1.975-5.203) and non-local household registration (OR=1.416, 95%CI:1.074-1.992) were risk factors for occurrence of injuries, while mothers as caregivers (OR=0.702, 95%CI:0.541-0.912) were protective factors for occurrence of injuries. Conclusion The incidence of injuries among the primary and secondary school students in Nanshan District showsdifferent characteristics. Different intervention measures should be taken in different school-age students so as to reduce the incidence of injuries.
