Abstract:Objective To investigate HIV/AIDS-related knowledge awareness and sexual behavior characteristics among pregnant women and puerperae in Ruian city from 2016 to 2018, and provide a basis for developing HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment strategies and intervention measures. Methods Questionnaire surveys were conducted among pregnant women and puerperae who visited Rui’an Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital for the first time from April to July each year in 2016-2018, and blood samples were collected to detect serum antibodies against HIV, syphilis and HCV. Results A total of 1,200 pregnant and lying-in women were monitored from 2016 to 2018, and the total awareness rate of HIV/AIDS-related knowledge was 86.25%. The awareness rates of HIV/AIDS-related knowledge in 2016-2018 were 82.00%, 85.00% and 91.75%, respectively, showing an upward tendency year by year (χ2=16.82,P<0.001). The awareness rate was found to be higher in pregnant and lying-in women aged above 25 years, those with higher educational background, primiparae and those with fewer births. The proportions of pregnant and lying-in women and their husbands who had been to other cities for working or doing business were 16.08% and 19.25%, respectively, and the proportions of drug abuse were 0.25% and 1.16%, respectively. Husbands who suffered from AIDS or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) accounted for 0.08%. The positive detection rates of antibodies against HIV, syphilis and HCV in pregnant and lying-in women were 0, 0.17% and 0.08%, respectively. Conclusions The rate of HIV infection in pregnant and lying-in women in Rui’an city is generally at a low prevalence level. Drug abuse is observed in some pregnant and lying-in women and their husbands, and STDs are found in their husbands; and hence, the maternal are at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS & STDs infection. We should take further effective measures to control the spread of HIV/AIDS & STDs among this population.
