Abstract:Objective To investigate the mortality and the characteristics of death spectrum in Huizhou City, Guangdong Province so as to provide evidence for the related departments to develop disease prevention strategies. Methods We collected the death-cause monitoring data of two national death surveillance points, Huiyang District and Boluo County in Huizhou City during 2013-2015. Classification of death causes was coded according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). The mortality and the constitution of causes of death were analyzed by DeathReg and SPSS16.0 softwares. Results The reported mortality in the two death surveillance points in 2013-2015 was 341.16/100, 000, with 364.82/100,000 for males and 313.30/100,000 for females. The elderly aged 60 years and above accounted for 73.7% of the total deaths, with 67.3% for males and 82.4% for females. The top 5 causes of death were as follows cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, malignant tumor, respiratory system disease, endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases and injuries. Their mortalities were 152.76/100,000, 75.96/100,000, 37.86/100,000, 15.25/100,000 and 13.70/100,000 respectively, and their sufferers accounted for 44.8%, 22.3%, 11.1%, 4.5% and 4.0% of the total deaths. The deaths from the top 5 causes of death in all accounted for 86.7%. The mortalities of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases as well as endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases were higher in females than in males, while those of malignant tumor, respiratory system diseases and injuries were higher in males than in females (both P<0.05). Conclusions Chronic non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, malignant tumor and respiratory system diseases are the major causes of death that endanger the health of residents in Huiyang District and Boluo County, Huizhou City. The mortality is higher in males than in females. More attention should be paid to the population aged 60 years and older.
