Detection results of respiratory tract viruses among hospitalized childrenin Shijiazhuang area in summer and autumn

Abstract:Objective To investigate the viral pathological spectrum and epidemilogical characteristics of respiratory tract infections among inpatient children in Shijiazhuang area so as to provide a scientific basis for prevention and control of respiratory tract infections. Methods The bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) specimens were collected from 241 children with severe acute respiratory tract infections who were hospitalized in the Children’s Hospital of Hebei Province from May to October 2015. Multiplex real-time RT-PCR was used to detect 15 kinds of respiratory tract viruses (RTVs). Results Among the 241 specimens, 89 were positive for RTVs, with the total detection rate of 36.93%. Human rhinovirus (HRV) accounted for 11.62%, followed by human parainfluenza virus 3 (PIV3, 9.96%), PIV1 (5.39%), human Boca virus (HBoV,4.56%), PIV4 (3.32%), human coronavirus OC43 (HCoV-OC43 2.07%), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV, 1.66%), adenovirus (ADV, 0.83%), influenza virus B (FluB, 0.83%) and PIV2 (0.83%). There were 10 (4.15%) cases of coinfection with 2 viruses, of which coinfection of HRV or PIV3 with other virus was dominant. Viral infection cases could be detected in both summer and autumn, with higher detection rate in summer. Most of the cases (75.52%) were childrens under 5 years old, and the detection rate of the age group of -2 years was the highest (48.78%). All the above-mentioned viruses could be detected both in summer and in autumn except that ADV could only be detected in summer and RSV in autumn. Conclusions The predominant respiratory viruses among children with severe respiratory tract infections in Shijiazhuang area in 2015 are HRV, PIV3, PIV1 and HBoV, and these viruses have unique epidemiological features in summer and autumn.
